Corporate Wellness Programs at Vitality Health

“Health care is a monumental issue for employers, and too much is at stake to be reactive. It’s time for companies to play offense rather than defense.”

When it comes to how you can impact the bottom line of your company, health of your employees may not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, ROI for an employee wellness program can be as high as 6:1 with an average of $3.27 for every dollar spent. That’s an excellent investment when you consider happy employees are also significantly less likely to turn over. Additionally, increased wellness leads to decreased presenteeism — when people come to work but under perform because of illness or stress — increasing productivity for you.

Employees with these seven risk factors cost employees 228% more than their counterparts:

  • tobacco use

  • hypertension

  • hypercholesterolemia

  • obesity

  • diabetes

  • stress

  • lack of physical activity

Obesity increases the risk of several different diseases and illnesses, some of which include heart disease, stroke, elevated blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, liver and gallbladder disease and some types of cancer. A study of 10,825 employees showed that obese employees are up to twice as likely to be absent from work due to illness than their counterparts. Estimated annual medical costs of obesity in the US was $147 billion in 2008 with medical costs for people who are obese being $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.

Another huge contributor is preventable disease, of which smoking is a large issue. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S. and nearly 18% of U.S. adults over the age of 18 smoke cigarettes. From 2009-2012 $133 billion dollars were spent on direct medical care with $156 billion in lost productivity and $5.6 billion for lost productivity due to exposure to secondhand smoke.

With more than one-third of American adults being obese and with preventable illness making up 70% of the total burden of disease, implementing a Corporate Wellness Program for employees can can have a huge impact on productivity of a company. One company studied saw lost work days decline by 80% within 6 years with a 50% reduction in workers’ comp premiums! The payout can be huge for productivity, the company gains, and most importantly, the lives of employees.
